The PlayStation 4 has been released in America and has broken all kinds of records, but what about the country where its corporate overlords are located. Sony has been holding out upon its fellow countrymen, but don’t worry too much. The console finally has its first television spot all set to entice potential buyers, and guess what! It makes the rest of the world see really cool! Yes, Sony’s method of advertisement in Japan is to sell the PlayStation 4 is not to show off any fun games that they might desire to play. No, they just show a bunch of Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc. standing in long lines to buy their console because if the gaijin who they favored with early releases are into the PlayStation 4, then it must be cool, right I’m not sure what the real message is here. There aren’t any great Japanese games available for the PlayStation 4 as of yet, so Sony doesn’t exactly desire to advertise that fact I suppose. Seriously, in the two minute commercial, no more than three seconds are dedicated to games. A flash of Knack, a flash of inFamous and Killzone, none of which are going to turn any heads in Japan. most likely the social aspects of the PlayStation 4 is what is up for sale in Japan because now they can connect with people overseas. I doubt that though because only hardcore gamers buy consoles in Japan anymore, and they aren’t too thrilled about playing with gamers they can’t speak with. No, the message here is clearly “see west” because that is what the entire video game industry is doing. We are so sorry, Japan, that we have turned our backs upon you after everything you have given us. The PlayStation 4 will be released in Japan upon Feb. 22, a full three months after the American release. I don’t think its going to be a huge success, unless Metal Gear Solid 5 ends up being the greatest thing ever made.
Jailbreak tweaks tend to fall into one of two categories. The first category is for tweaks that make the iOS experience a nicer one to live with via improved aesthetics. Things like icon packs, themes for apps and custom fonts etc. fit squarely in this category, as you may well imagine. The other category is for functional tweaks. Tweaks that change the way iOS works, often at a very low level. This can include tweaks like MyWi, MailEnhancer and other popular tweaks that tend to receive a lot of attention in the jailbreak community, especially amongst the more technical people out there. There is, however, a third category that we’re particularly eager on but sometimes gets missed. It’s the category for tweaks that do fabulous things but also see great while they’re doing it. Auxo would fit the bill here, and while iOS 7′s multitasking means Auxo isn’t as important as it was a few months ago, there’s little doubting its place in jailbreaking history. That third category is also where we’d put the just released tweak by developer Tyler Nettleton, called Swipey. Available on Cydia right away from the BigBoss repo and priced at 1.99, Swipey both changes the way people will use their iOS devices as well as looking lovely while it works its magic. What Swipey does may not be entirely new, but it’s a new take on it. Swipey, as you can see from the video which weve embedded under, is a tweak that makes it possible to launch apps straight from the iOS 7 lock screen. Swiping to unlock the device will take users into a full-screen switcher-type interface that can be swiped again to move to the next app. Launching the required app is simply a case of pausing on it instead of swiping, in which case the app is brought to the foreground and the phone is unlocked. There are already plenty of tweaks that allow the launching of apps from the lock screen, and some are very great indeed. Nettleton’s take is a little different to those though, and it’s great to see developers still working on new, and perhaps better ways of doing things that may otherwise be considered to have been sewn up by others. Available to download from the BigBoss repo, as we mentioned before, and is only compatible with devices running iOS 7. And yes, in case youre wondering, the tweak is compatible with 64-bit A7 devices as well. The tweaks settings can be configured from the iOS Settings app. For tutorials on how-to jailbreak, check out: iOS 7 7.0.4 Jailbreak: Download Evasi0n 7 For iPhone 5s, 5c, 5, iPad, iPod touch Windows / Mac Jailbreak iOS 7 7.0.4 Untethered on iPhone 5s, 5c, 5, 4s And More With Evasi0n 7 Video Tutorial Be definite to check out our iPhone Apps Gallery and iPad Apps Gallery to explore more apps for your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. An fervent fan has dug up the ToeJam and Earl III: Mission to Earth beta copy on the Dreamcast, and he has finallyreleased it for everyone to enjoy. It is not the most beloved game in SEGA’s Xbox line-up, but ToeJam and Earl IIIhas its old-school charm and library of wacky ideas. I’m always a sucker for randomly generated levels. Originally, it was intended to be released on the Dreamcast and Nintendo 64, but due to the unfortunate collapse of SEGA’s beloved console, the company scrapped this older version in favor of the Xbox. It was released in 2002 to mediocre reviews. User ZakHooiTM discovered the files on a Dreamcast dev-kit he picked up for 1,200. He has reached out to SEGA for permission to release his build, but has not yet heard back from them. “When I received the devkit I was fervent to see what was on the internal difficult drive all devkits have one, except older versions,” ZakHooiTM wrote. “I connected the kit to my PC and opened Windows Explorer, there where the raw files of the game. However, I had to rebuild the GD-M GD Emulator project file in order to get it to boot, when I got it to boot I went to Assembler Games and showed my discovery. So there are no GD-ROMs that are discovered, I just got very lucky to find the game assets and the binary to boot the game.” He is asking for donations for the build, and the proceeds will all be donated to charity at Marden School for learning disorders. We will half advocate his release for the purpose of history and seeing what could have been, but it would be awfully nice of you to hunt down a genuine copy of the Xbox version of ToeJam and Earl III: Mission to Earthbefore downloading the game. It’s cheap no matter where you look.
Snapchat is not off to a good begin in 2014 as last night hackers revealed they had obtained 4.6 million user names and phone numbers from the popular photo sharing service. Last week it was revealed by Gibson Security that a security hole in Snapchat could potentially let someone to associate the username and phone number of users to strip away some of the privacy the service offers. The company addressed the issue on its blog stating that the hack was possible, but it would require someone to “upload a immense set of phone numbers, like all number in an area code, or all possible number in the U.S., they could make a database of the results and match usernames to phone numbers that way.” The company went on to state that it had added safeguards over the past year, but they never directly stated that

A recent study from Pew Internet reveals that Facebook still dominates social media, commanding the largest and most obsessive user base even while teens are apparently fleeing the site. The survey focuses on the 73 percent of online adults who use social media, and also reveals that Facebook and Instagram boast the highest user engagement. For Facebook, Pew found that 63 percent of users check in daily, while on Instagram 57 percent come back every day. Meanwhile, only 47 percent of Twitter users are daily visitors. The study doesn’t lid newly popular services such as Snapchat, which blur the line between messaging and social media and boast a deeply engaged user base. Facebook also dominates when it comes to total users, with 71 percent of online adults using the site. LinkedIn came in second in the category with 22 percent followed by Pinterest 21, Twitter 18 and Instagram 17. Facebook’s strength comes from it mixed user demographic. By comparison, Pinterest is most popular among female users, while LinkedIn is frequently used by young professionals. How Facebook will fare in 2014 in the face of rapidly growing startups and waning teen interest is unclear, but at least for now the social network is still clearly deeply embedded in modern society.
With the jailbreak having recently arrived for iOS 7, all of those tweaks made well-known throughout the last few releases of the Apple mobile ecosystem are being frantically updated. Today its the turn of TetherMe, a well-liked hotspot app for iPhone and iPad, and as well as now offering full compatibility for iOS 7, it has also been boosted by support for the new 64-bit A7 processor based devices. Although the iPhone and iPad does offer ‘Personal Hotspot’ access as a native feature, some carriers like to deactivate it, preventing users from using their cellular data for tethering purposes – until you pay them to enable the feature. But with TetherMe, a tool that essentially overrides this limitation, you can set your hotspot up exactly as you hope, and since this even works on older devices right the way back to the iPhone 3G, it may even be worth digging out your antiquated handset from the dusty drawer and using it as a makeshift Mi-Fi. Having used TetherMe on an old iPhone 3G for quite a while, it has always been completely honorable, and as well as Wi-Fi, you can also readily tether through Bluetooth and USB – as per the stock offering. Please note, however, that if your carrier has disabled tethering because you’re not permitted to use it on your current deal, then you must read very carefully. Many network operators have been known to automatically upgrade the service plans of those caught tethering without warning, and what’s more, you could incur sky-high additional charges depending on which company you do business with. TetherMe works with iOS 4 through the latest iOS 7 thanks to the update, and costs 4.99. In my opinion, TetherMe is the go-to app for those looking to tether on their iOS device, and for a cent bashful of five bucks, is definitely fine value for money. You can source TetherMe over at the BigBoss repository, which will be in your default repo list provided that you haven’t opted to manually remove it. Simply hit the Search tab in Cydia, type in TetherMe, and after a reboot, you’ll be fine to go! If youre looking for an alternative, then be certain to give MyWi 7.0 for iOS 7 a shot too. 2013 marked a particularly exciting year for technology. We saw the introduction of real, usable wearable technology, new smartphones and tablets that pushed the capabilities of what we can do right from our pockets beyond our imaginations, and even the introduction of some amazing new gaming consoles. While it’s always fun to look back at the biggest trends, it’s also important to look back at the biggest flops of the year. After all, technology moves so quickly that there are bound to be some mistakes that we can learn from along the way. Without further ado, we present the biggest tech flops of 2013. HP Chromebook 11 Charger speak about a warm product!Recalls are beautiful common in general, but it’s not that regularly that we look a fragment of technology called back to manufacturers. Even more worrisome is when the recall involves potential dangers to the end user. That’s exactly what happened this year with the HP Chromebook 11, an entry-level notebook running Chrome OS. Google and HP ultimately recalled the device after it was discovered that the charger was prone to overheating and could possibly cause a
It’s never good to start off the beginning of a new year shrouded in controversy and having to deal with a public relations nightmare, but that’s exactly the position which Snapchat finds itself in. The company behind the photo messaging app has confirmed that the apps user database has indeed been comprised. The news itself is quite daunting, but the situation is further compounded by the fact that the details of more than 4.6 million accounts have been posted online by those who compromised the company’s infrastructure. This isn’t the first time that a security related concern has hovered over Snapchat. A security company recently made it known that they have detected a vulnerability in the Snapchat service that allowed the phone numbers of registered users to be exposed based on their username. In response to those claims, Snapchat tried their best to deflect the situation by claiming that the potential for obtaining personal data seemed “impractical”, but also implemented additional security to ensure that something like that could never happen going forward. The individuals behind this recent data breach have actually paid Snapchat a back handed praise in the process. It seems that the company has indeed added additional security measures to combat the previously noted issues and have fixed the loophole that was found. However, those measures were clearly not enough to stop the underlying database from being compromised, resulting in 4.6 million account details being posted online. The website that hosted and made the details public has subsequently disappeared, but the broken has already been done. The group behind the attack – who is currently choosing to remain anonymous – is claiming that they took the opportunity to release these details with the intention of bringing awareness to the loopholes and vulnerabilities that continue to exist in the seed funded app. Although they are currently anonymous, the group behind the data reveal did leave a message on their website that: The company was too reluctant at patching the exploit until they knew it was too late and companies that we trust with our information should be more careful when dealing with it. Snapchat may have been one of 2013′s hottest apps, but it seems that 2014 may prove a little more inspiring. via: ZDNet You can follow us on Twitter, add us to your circle on Google or like our Facebook page to keep yourself updated on every the latest from Microsoft, Google, Apple and the web.
Apple’s Maps app is yet very much in the process of recovering from its disastrous launch alongside iOS 6 late in 2012, and although it’s yet quite a way off Google Maps in almost every sense, things have certainly improved during the past fifteen or so months. One of the marquee features of Maps since its inception has been the turn-by-turn navigation, but it’s not available to every user. positive locations don’t yet have sustain for turn-by-turn, but a new tweak available in Cydia will unlock said feature if you are jailbroken. The release of a jailbreak for iOS 7 has greatly enhanced the capabilities of our beloved devices, and moreover, will allow tweaksters to profit the most out of the new 64-bit processors of the new iPad mini, iPad Air and iPhone 5s – all of which also boast an M7 motion coprocessor. The significant SoC upgrade this time around makes the iOS 7 jailbreak perhaps the most significant to date, and already, we’ve seen some of the most well-liked tweaks of old being treated to useful upgrades that create use of the new architecture. While MapsAllCountries is not exactly one of them. it may greatly enhance your Maps app if you reside, or are visiting a country where turn-by-turn is not supported. Compatible with both iOS 6 and iOS 7, iDevice users in countries like Brazil will be able to enjoy a more full-on Maps experience once they’ve downloaded and installed this tweak, with functional turn-by-turn sustain for those trying to locate their way around. Even if you don’t have any use for this particular tweak, it’s easy to look why a jailbreak is so important to so many. Such a small Cydia package can greatly enhance the native Maps app for a lot of people, and if your trust in Apple’s stock effort has been restored amid its recent progress, then flame up Cydia and grab this tweak right now! MapsAllCountries is absolutely free of charge, and can be gathered from the BigBoss repository in Cydia. There are no configurable settings to consider, meaning that once you’ve performed a respring, your turn-by-turn should be in full flow. If you no longer require the option, simply remove the package via Cydia and respring. Android Gingerbread 2.3 seems a long time ago, and indeed, in terms of progress, it was. It was the last major smartphone only-release before it joined forces with Honeycomb to bring Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, and while this unified release did offer a plethora of new features, it also took a fair few away. The ability to sync contacts with Facebook was one of them, and although this decision was probably a win for overall security and privacy, many did find it rather useful. Never the kind to leave Android users bereft, the folks of XDA-Developers have brought the feature back from the dead, and you can catch the details after the fold. Thanks to XDA-Devs forum member cuadedanh, Facebook Contact Sync has been reinstated courtesy of his flashable mod. Nintendo’s Wii was a roaring success, at least for the first few years of its life. Sell-outs the world over and an ability to draw so-called non-gamers into a market that was previously dominated by hardcore fans had Nintendo’s coffers overflowing. When it came time to put the Wii out to pasture and replace it with something a tiny more modern, the Wii U was created. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the Wii U has failed to capture the imagination in the same way that its predecessor has, which as a result has left it floundering in an industry where powerhouses like the Xbox One and the Sony PlayStation 4 are likely to eat its lunch and then force it to shine their shoes. If you did actually buy a Wii U though, there might be a use for that huge tablet-like controller that you’ve got gathering dust in the corner of the room. If you’re one for a spot of hackery, that is. Presenting at the 2013 Chaos Communications Congress event, two smart chappies have shown off something that is rather awesome, if unlikely to make that much of an impact on our lives. If you’ve ever wanted to be able to play PC games on a Wii U’s controller though, you’re going to be a tiny bit giddy. A tiny bit too giddy if youre a complete nerd. During the presentation, available to watch on YouTube now, we’re shown a PC running the Dolphin emulator loaded with a Zelda Wind Waker ROM. That’s not the best part though. The really impressive thing is that we then see the game being pushed over to a Wii U controller, complete with surprisingly good video reproduction and controls. The screen may only be 854 x 480 resolution, but it’s certainly better than nothing and more than adequate for playing games running through an emulator, that’s for definite. It’s entirely debateable how useful this really us, but what isn’t debatable is the cool factor. The duck has proven a hit around the world. Image Credit: YouTube / ITN A 50ft version of the traditional bath toy met an untimely end under mysterious circumstances. The big inflatable duck was the creation of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and was intended to be part of the New Year celebrations at the Taiwanese harbor of Keelung. Unfortunately however the gargantuan yellow bath toy suddenly collapsed after just 11 days on display and nobody seems to know why.”We desire to apologise to the fans of the yellow rubber duck,” said organiser Huang Jing-tai. “We will carefully examine the duck to determine the cause.”Hofman had originally designed the odd exhibit in the hope that it would bring people together and promote public art, with several other versions having proven very successful at various locations around the world including Sydney, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
The stuff of nightmares. Image Credit: Vine / Paglo One man got the fright of his life after poking a ‘toupee’ that turned out to be a gigantic pile of spiders. Footage taken by a man as he investigated a odd hairy object on the top of a slide has gone viral after it was revealed that the otherwise innocuous looking object was in fact a gigantic clump of spiders with very long legs.Almost as soon as he’d touched the pile the man reeled back in horror as hundreds of the arachnids started to swarm all over the area. The incident has been retweeted more than 103,000 times and has since become an Internet phenomenon.”I thought it was a toupee. The astonishing design has been attracting a lot of attention. Image Credit: YouTube / ITN A strange crop circle has been hitting the headlines since appearing in a barley field east of Salinas. Consisting of a large outer ring, several smaller circles and a complex pattern of squares and rectangles, the astonishing design turned up in a Californian field early on Monday morning and spans an place almost an acre across.Local residents appeared baffled by the incident with no explanation forthcoming as to how or why someone would go to such lengths to create it. The field’s owner has since hired security guards to monitor the property, allowing access only to news reporters.”I don’t know what it is supposed to be … but it is beautiful,” said Julie Belanger who recorded aerial footage of the design. To date nobody knows who was responsible or how it was done.
Starting New Years Day, Netflixs library of content will be almost 100 films lighter, with some notable titles, including top Gun, among the casualties. Whats a Netflix user to do Fortunately, the streaming service will be adding some movies in the hopes people wont notice the absence of such films as 50 First Dates. Many of the new additions are decades old, but there are some notable movies nonetheless, such as big Trouble in tiny China and American Psycho. And for all you kids of the 90s, good Burger is also being added to Netflixs catalog, instantly making up for the lack of Seed of Chucky, Desperadoand Flashdance combined. Nothing will replace Cant Hardly Wait, however. Nothing. This is simply part of the world of streaming; its too bad content cant simply be added, and not taken away. The second half of Dexters last season is being added in addition to the new movies, so youll have plenty to watch once Jan. 1 hits. And if you havent yet seen some of the films upon the outgoing list, you only have mere hours until theyre gone.

I’ve been harsh on Microsoft for its lackluster choices of free Games with Gold offer through Xbox Live, but January is the month where I must eat my own cap. The two games offered are worlds better than what has been offered in previous months. First and foremost is Sleeping Dogs, Square Enix’s open-world crime epic taking area in the troubled streets of Hong Kong. Any fan of Hong Kong cinema, which in a perfect world would be everybody, will locate themselves living out their wildest dual-pistol and kung-fu dreams if they give this smart game a try. It was a sleeper hit in 2012 and remains one of the best sandbox games of recent memory. An easy recommendation. The second game is another fabulous tiny game that I might have some controversial thoughts on. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is an isometric platformer packed with action and puzzles for the legendary archaeologist to dig through. It sports co-op gameplay, time trial modes, and an addictive point system which will inspire you to try again and again for a perfect score. Where I differ from most people on this game is that I found it far more fun than the big-budget Tomb Raider reboot released earlier this year. I bought both for 15 and felt I got more for my money from this genius indie spin on the series. The replay value is out of this world. Too bad Crystal Dynamics has abandoned it after the reboot proved so successful. Two great games, two more reasons to subscribe to Xbox Live.
