Project Eternity Renamed Pillars of Eternity, First Gameplay Trailer

Project Eternity is still on the minds of Kickstarter fans as one of the premiere titles to emerge from the crowd-campaigning service. It must be tough to think of it by any other name considering how closely associated its moniker has become, but Obsidian has finally revealed the title’s true name, Pillars of Eternity. The old-school RPG continues to take shape in the halls of Obsidian, and the very first gameplay trailer has just emerged. Pillars of Eternity is inspired by classic Infinity Engine RPGs like Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale, and the look and feel of this new game just seethes with that turn-of-the-century mindset. Isometric graphics, point-and-click combat, simple yet stunning battle animations. It’s just like the older games made popular by BioWare and Black Isle Studios. Of course, Obsidian is mostly made up of ex-Black Isle employees, so it goes to say that they know what they are doing. The only major difference between Pillars of Eternity and the older games is just how drop dead gorgeous it looks. We’ve seen the PC RPG genre evolve to incorporate more of the characters’ viewpoint, but in doing so many have abandoned the overhead isometric view of the action. Pillars of Eternity feels like what would have bee the natural evolution of the classics if their approaches hadn’t changed. I am not a backer of Pillars of Eternity, but there is now a new option to be one. Obsidian has opened up a new channel for donations, and 35 will land you a copy of the game when it gets released. Sounds tempting, but I am still waiting to receive one single game I have crowded funded. Maybe I’ll feel more generous once I see my donations start to pay off. Not that I don’t trust Obsidian. I’m a fan of its games and trust them to make sure that Pillars of Eternity is top of the line. I just don’t want to constantly be checking in on more projects than my spare time allows. The release date is being aimed at some time in 2014 for PCs.
