The 15 Best Video Games of 2013

2013 is done. Gone. Finito. Its been a heck of a year for video games, and we here at TechnoBuffalo are yet feeling a little overwhelmed by all that was out there to play. The gaming staff collected our favorite gaming titles from 2013 into a giant pile. We whittled that selection down to 15, and thats what youll see under this introduction. Two points to note before you dive in and receive all riled up. First, this list is in alphabetical order. Second, its based on personal preference. We each had equal tug when picking our 15 favorites of the year, so save that in mind. Her are the best games of 2013 according to Eric Frederiksen, Joey Davidson and Ron Duwell at TechnoBuffalo. Animal Crossing: New Leaf Joey Its December. I booted up my Nintendo 3DS this morning specifically to play a game that released way back in June of this year. Not many games make me do that, but Animal Crossing: New Leaf does. Thanks to exceptionally tight gameplay and rewarding mechanics doled out on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has become a standard play on my Nintendo 3DS. During downtime, while waiting somewhere and right before bed, I find myself firing the title up just to see whats going on in my village. The world was expertly crafted, and theres a constant sense of newness and objective. Thats awesome. BioShock Infinite defied expectations by creating a universe more perverse and enticing than its predecessor did back in 2007. Irrational Games was able to overcome its overwritten and bloated storyline by throwing enough hints at genuine world issues like social classes, the dangers of theocracy and revolution against propaganda. BioShock Infinite also found a way to naturally evolve the combat in this series, putting less focus on guns, which receive picked up and thrown out like candy wrappers, and more into the Plasmids and combat from the air with the Sky-Hook. New tactics to approach a combat situation increase drastically with the vertical dimension attacking from the air brings. Soaring through Columbias faux-peace setting was a highlight of 2013, and the twisted ending pulled off just enough justification to account for its protruding writing. Order This From Amazon

Interview: Ryan Negri Sells Negri Electronics; What He Learned Along the Way

Ryan Negri, owner of one of the largest independent sellers of unlocked phones in the United States, announced today that hes sold the company he started seven years and seven months ago. The buyer New York-based private equity firm First Ascent LLC. Negri, the current CEO and founder of Negri Electronics, will stay on with the company as a sales executive and a member of the board of directors. TechnoBuffalo had a chance to interview Negri about his experience starting and owning his own company, what he learned along the way, where he sees the future of the industry, and what his own plans are moving forward. What’s the best thing you learned owning your own small business It’s not as simple as it looks from the outside. It’s more than a full time job to do it correctly and do it well. You need help along the way, nobody can do it by themselves and if they do it’s going to be a slow and painful process of making mistakes and having to correct them and making definite those mistakes aren’t too vast. Seeking advice is important, as is having trust in people you can seek advice from. That’s a thing that was a problem in this industry – there aren’t alot of competitors that are going to help you. They’ll give you tips here and there, but its mostly learn as you go. I made mistakes, but they weren’t vast enough where it would take down the business. One example is when we started, chargebacks were vast and we were selling tall-value items. It was difficult taking those steps back with a vast 900 chargeback. One or two of those hits early in your business and you’re out of business. It was tough to learn that way, people basically taking money from you. But we got smarter, we got better, we protected the site and our company better. We screened customers orders and buying habits and now it’s a lot better with more protection in place. To begin your own business, you have to make definite you have the time and your family does too. It takes a toll on everybody. You’re working 15-16 hours a day when you first begin, and it can get to be more if you become busier, or successful. Making definite you have the dedication and the time to do it is probably the most important thing. What was it like selling your business Selling your baby It was really exciting but it was a lot. The buyer came in and was interested in a deal but they were first interested in investing. They wanted to close an investment deal by the stop of the year. But once they saw the business, they made an offer for the entire thing. We had to hustle and make definite

Five Tweaks To Help Speed Up iOS 7 On iPhone

As Apple keeps making its iPhones and iPads faster, it also keeps adding features to iOS that need more and more processing power. While we’re all for Apple making our devices more useful by adding new stuff to them, we’re not so keen on the idea of the hardware we depend on becoming bogged down, often thanks to features or eye candy that we simply don’t want. If you’re jailbroken though, there are means and ways to try and restore some of the snappiness to iOS 7 that we used to love, potentially returning some of our older hardware to former glories in the process. After all, we can’t all afford to buy the latest hardware to come out of Cupertino, can we Here we’re going to lid five jailbreak tweaks that could, potentially at least, help to speed up iOS 7 on that iPhone or iPad that you tote around. Hopefully you won’t be waiting for things to happen or apps to load anymore! FakeClockUp An oldie but a goodie, FakeClockUp takes iOS animations and then reduces the time they take to complete. Apple Denies All iPhone NSA Backdoor Allegations In Official Statement

It has long since been common knowledge that sure government agencies use a number of digital spying tactics to keep tabs on sure activity. Only recently, details have begun to emerge of just how much intel the NSA has been collecting, to the point where it seems as though there’s very tiny that anybody can do digitally without the NSA brown-nosing. With some products having leaked info to the NSA without the knowledge of the user, Apple has taken the opportunity to distance itself from such behavior in stating that it has "never worked with the NSA to make a backdoor in any products." The NSA’s access to our digital spectrum is a hot topic of conversation right now, and just recently, we learned that the agency could access quite a bit of the Apple iPhone. But while the NSA harbors such abilities, Apple maintains that it has had nothing to do with it, and further, that it was unaware that such activity was even taking place. With its products being mentioned amid the rife NSA spying stories, it seems as though the Cupertino wanted to go on record and declare that it categorically had nothing to do with the NSA’s worryingly deep access to the Apple iPhone. Speaking to AllThingsD, Apple has stated that it never once did work with the NSA to make any backdoors through which the agency could exploit. Yes, Apple is compliant with official requests made, but it has never dishonestly allowed any organization to access info through any kind of backdoor in its product ecosystems. Apple continues in its effort to plug any gaps in software that could let third parties access to sensitive info. Whether it’s the government watching, or simply a chancing hacker looking to steal information for unscrupulous purposes, Tim Cooks men remain dedicated to the task of keeping things as safe as possible. So, there you have it. Yes, the NSA could be logging much of your iPhone’s info, but no, Apple isn’t willfully facilitating this practice. The iOS ecosystem has proven itself to be among the most safe in the business, and with enterprise adoption continuing to nibble at a market previously dominated by BlackBerry, the privacy-conscious will be hard-pushed to find a more safe platform than Apple’s. NASA Experiments With New Gaming Tech for Robotics

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab is always looking for fascinating, affordable tech to make space missions easier and cheaper to initiate. This time, the team is testing a combination of the Xbox One Kinect sensor and the Oculus Rift headset: Using the new Xbox One Kinect sensor, we are able to manipulate the JACO robot arm in genuine time. By combining position tracking from the Kinect and rotational tracking with the Oculus, we provide a first-person view for the operator. Future work will include integrating sensor array data into the scene and translating our research to the Robonaut 2 humanoid on the International Space Station. From the research side of things, this is a great proof-of-concept to show another application of consumer technology in a research environment. This sort of thing could be applied anywhere humans shouldn’t be going but autonomous or controller-operated robots aren’t quite nimble enough to work. It could also decrease the need extra-vehicular activities during space missions or even future landings on the Moon and Mars. For gamers, this isn’t the first time the two technologies have been combined, but it’s just a another great demonstration of how they could work together in PC gaming if the right developer put the time in. LG Unveils New PCs and Tab-Book2 Ahead of CES 2014

LG is set to take the stage at CES next week, but it looks like the South Korean company just couldn’t wait to show off some of its new products for 2014. Earlier today, LG announced just a few of the new devices it’s bringing to Las Vegas, including two new PCs and a second-generation Tab-Book pictured above. The Tab-Book2, a follow-up to the original model unveiled at CES 2013, is a tablet-laptop hybrid running Windows 8.1. The devices features an 11.6-inch Full HD touchscreen with built-in slide-out keyboard and an Intel Core i5 processor. tiny else about the product was mentioned, though we expect to learn of the rest of its features next week. LG will also unveil a 13.3-inch Ultra PC with an HD display, a slimmed down design, Haswell processor and SSD withhold. Finally, the company revealed a massive 27-inch all-in-one AIO PC, which also doubles as a TV, and even offers describe-in-describe so you can channel surf and browse the web simultaneously on the similar screen. The South Korean company didn’t detail pricing or release dates for any of the products and, again, we expect to hear more on those fronts next week when it shows each off during its press conference.

Sony Allegedly Eyeing Windows Phone Launch in 2014

HTC, Samsung and, of course, Nokia have been Microsoft’s primary Windows Phone partners, with the latter being the most prevalent of any out there. Now Sony may enter the fold with at least one of its own devices. According toThe Information,Sony “has considered launching a Windows Phone as soon as mid-2014.” Of course, considering is a lot easier than actually launching a device, and we presume plenty of companies have “considered” plans in the past. still,The Information says it learned its info from someone who was briefed on the device, which suggests the talks are at least advanced, and that a second person was involved in talks between Microsoft and Sony. The Japanese company reportedly started to profit interest after Microsoft cut licensing fees,The Information said. Windows Phone hasn’t been as popular as Android for phone makers, since it’s more expensive to use Windows Phone than Android. Similarly, Android has a larger ecosystem of apps, which has been more attractive to consumers than Windows Phone. In any case, right now this is very much a rumor since Sony has been extremely focused on Android, and the experience it offers across devices, including wearables like the SmartWatch 2 that don’t withhold Windows Phone. Perhaps Sony will acquire its feet wet this year, though with a mid-2014 launch date, we wish it’s with a future version of Windows Phone. TechnoBuffalo contacted Sony for a comment on the rumor, though a spokesperson was not immediately available.

Watch: The Future According To Samsung [VIDEO]

Samsung Display has released a video demonstrating a rather idealistic take on the future of tech, and sees its panels delving much deeper into consumer and enterprise markets than currently seen. The cut, which was a part of the companys analyst day back in November and has since just leaked into the wild, once again outlines Samsung’s admirable ambition, but despite this, could we really envision a world where almost

Atlus Holiday Sale has Great Savings on Nintendo 3DS

Is there a better third party developer for the Nintendo 3DS than Atlus I didn’t think so. Not only does it offer the best non-Nintendo games upon the platform, but it also discounts its games more often than the competition. The holiday season is coming to a close, and all of its games are currently knocked down to rock bottom prices. Here are the list of games. Shin Megami Tensei IV 29.99 from 49.99 Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked 19.99 from 29.99 Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers 19.99 from 29.99 Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium girl 29.99 from 39.99 Etrian Odyssey IV 19.99 from 29.99 Code of Princess 19.99 from 29.99 I picked up Code of Princess because I am a fan of the SEGA Saturn classic Guardian Heroes, the first game the designers worked upon. I couldn’t say no to still another discount. I haven’t played it still, but it looks like a lot of fun. I also snagged Etrian Odyssey IV, one of my absolute favorite games from 2013. I already own and beat the physical version, but I am converting my entire collection into digital form, so is there a better time to do that than a sale The game is worth it anyway. all of the other games are an easy recommendation, but Shin Megami Tensei IV is the obvious standout. I’m playing through it now, after buying it during an earlier sale, and it is one of the most complete and fun JRPGs in recent memory, and another one of the best games from 2013. If you love Japanese games but have

HP to Layoff 5,000 Additional Employees

Last year HP originally said that it had plans to layoff 27,000 workers as part of a major restructuring effort. That figure slowly climbed to 29,000 workers this year, and now it’s growing yet again. In a recent 10-K filing, HP said that it is now targeting to layoff a total of 34,000 employees, 5,000 more than was projected the last time HP discussed layoffs. HP blamed the increase in layoffs not on changes particularly to its restructuring plans, but rather to “continued market and business pressures.” on the consumer side, those pressures include competition in the laptop business, but also largely from tablets that have chewed into laptop sales over the past several years. HP hasn’t fared well in the mobile market at every: it doesn’t sell smartphones and its tablets are low-end at best. HP’s restructuring is focused on other areas, though. When the company first announced its massive rounds of layoffs in 2012, it said they were part of a plan to “improve execution and fund long term health” while streamlining operations and improving processes.

LG Lifeband Touch Wearable Device Leaked Online

Following the success of wearable fitness trackers like Nike FuelBand, the Fitbit Flex and the Jawbone Up, companies such as Samsung and LG are expected to create a shove into the same market in 2014. Today, we got a first look at LG’s design with a rendered image of the device obtained by Twitter tipster evleaks. LG Lifeband Touch. pic.twitter.com/ixWxxVsYsf — evleaks evleaks December 31, 2013 Despite earlier reports that LG would name its sharp-band the G-Health, evleaks claims the device will be called the Lifeband Touch, suggesting that the new product will feature some sort of touchscreen or touchpad. Based upon the image above, we’re guessing LG’s device will sport a touchpad and a little button – pictured here encircled in green light. We’re expecting to look plenty of new wearable technology at CES 2014, and LG’s alleged Lifeband Touch should create a welcome addition to the expo’s lineup of new devices. Whether we’ll look the product unveiled in Las Vegas is yet unconfirmed, and we likely won’t know the respond until the trade show kicks off next week.

How To Create iOS 7 Inspired Blurred Wallpaper For iPhone

With the arrival of iOS 7 it’s an undeniable fact that Apple changed the way our iPhones, iPads and iPod touches look in a pretty major way. Whether you like the more radiant, more flat and more playful aesthetic or not, there’s no doubt that the hardware in your hand may have stayed the similar, but the software is all-new. That enormous sea-change in the way anything looks on our screens led to people being more conscious of their wallpapers, with even those who previously weren’t predisposed to going wallpaper hunting online now eager to locate something that fit better with the overall look of iOS 7. The stock wallpapers gave us all an idea of what worked, but they weren’t to everyone’s taste. Soon, apps began sprouting up on the App Store that allowed people to create their own iOS7-inspired wallpapers using gradients and the like. Now, Blur Studio brings blurring to the masses, and the wallpapers it creates aren’t the only things that look great here – the app itself is gorgeous too. hot on the heels of another of its apps, Tick, Taphive has launched the Blur Studio app so that those of us who like to make our iOS devices look their best can create our own wallpapers right on our own smartphones or tablets without the need to venture to a ‘real’ computer. The gist of the app is a simple one. Users take their existing photos, perhaps of their children or pets, and then use Blur Studio to alter them to make a great looking wallpaper. Beyond simply blurring the pictures, the app also lets users add tints, apply filters and alter the saturation. The end results can be quite stunning, and while the images will need to be exported to the Camera Roll in order to be used rather than a one-button solution in-app, the whole thing is about as easy and self-explanatory as we could really hope for. Picking Blur Studio up is just a case of heading on over to the iOS App Store and handing over a couple of dollars in exchange for Taphive’s hard work. We think it’s well worth the investment, and we suspect you will too. Prototype Of The Original 2007 iPhone Fetches $1,499 On eBay [Photos]

What is claimed to be a genuine prototype of the original iPhone has sold via Internet auction site eBay for a cool 1,499. Details on how exactly the seller managed to profit their hands on the device are sketchy to say the least, but with the listing claiming the unit to be one of only five in existence, the Reddit user who made the buy will certainly be the envy of many hardcore iPhone fanboys. What’s rarer than an Apple prototype making it onto eBay is it actually staying there. It’s often the case that such devices gather quite a bit of publicity, and soon after the story hits the press,  the auction is closed and everybody seemingly forgets the rare artifact that was initially up for grabs. The fact that the seller and buyer made the transaction through eBay’s ‘buy it Now’ facility, which allows fixed-price sales to be made as opposed to running the traditional auction, certainly helped this iPhone prototype avoid the chop, and although the listing does mention a few fascinating details, hopefully we’ll profit the low-down as well as some verification of its genuineness once the buyer has received it. still, as per the item description, the prototype is in good condition, and features a model / serial number on the rear panel, as well as signal measurements. Rather than running any flavor of iOS or iPhone OS, as it was known back then, this item is said to run on special test software, which, if you question us, is easily the most exciting thing about this prototype in general. The device itself is likely to a rough-and-ready version of the eventual first iPhone, but without meaning to take everything away from the hardware, that test software is perhaps more significant as the first block from which Apple’s mobile operating system grew and evolved to its current state. Some are touting the 1,500 sale price as being a tad steep, but if, as the description stated, this is indeed only one of five in circulation, this collector’s item could be worth a small fortune in years to arrive. MyWi 7.0 For iOS 7 Released: Features All New Design, 5GHz WiFi Tethering And More

If there’s one developer that’s synonymous with jailbreaking, it has to be Intelliborn. Around since the early days of jailbreaking, Intelliborn is who we should thank for some of the best jailbreak tweaks around, and certainly some of the tweaks that we install as soon as we jailbreak a new iPhone or iPad. One of the tweaks that Intelliborn is best known for is MyWi. Originally launched as a way to tether devices to an iPhone before tethering was officially built into iOS by Apple, MyWi has since grown into more than a simple tweak for allowing people to tether, and while some may have expected it to wither following Apple’s inclusion of tethering into iOS itself it is yet one of the tweaks that people look out for when a new jailbreak becomes available. When Evad3rs launched its Evasi0n iOS 7 jailbreak last week, Intelliborn was also there to launch its iOS 7-compatible MyWi 7, making certain that those who rely on its tweak would be able to continue doing so once they made the hop to Apple’s latest and greatest version of iOS. As if compatibility wasn’t enough though, Intelliborn has now released an update that brings us to version 7.01.01. Pushed out a few hours ago, this new version of MyWi adds maintain for 5GHz Wi-Fi tethering on devices that maintain it. Those devices include the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and quite a few iPads. With 5GHz maintain users should be able to create tethering bubbles with less interference, hopefully giving them more speed to play with in the process. As is usually the case, Intelliborn is offering this update as a free one to existing MyWi owners, and in fact MyWi 7 is a free update to those that currently have a MyWi 6 license too. People upgrading from versions 4 or 5 will need to pay a 4.99 fee, and those with no prior MyWi license can gain in on the action for 19.99. There’s a 3-day trial that can be used should you need to kick the tires on MyWi before handing over your money, too. As always, MyWi can be installed via Cydia, with a huge range of iOS devices supported. Spirituality linked to lower depression risk

Spiritual belief can help stave off depression. Image Credit: sxc.hu Scientists have discovered that religion and spirituality can have a beneficial effect on the brain. Religious belief has long been thought to offer psychological benefits, but now researchers have discovered that spirituality can also offer protection for individuals with a tall risk of depression. The study involved comparing the brains of people for whom spirituality was important with those who did not withhold any spiritual beliefs. The results indicated that the brain’s outer layer, the cortex, was thicker in tall risk patients who subscribed to spiritual beliefs than it was in those who didn’t.”Our beliefs and our moods are reflected in our brain and with new imaging techniques we can begin to see this,” said psychiatry and epidemiology professor Myrna Weissman. “The brain is an fabulous organ. It not only controls, but is controlled by our moods.”While the research does not indicate that the thicker brain region produces a higher tendency to withhold religious beliefs, it does suggest that holding such beliefs can provide a physical, measurable resilience against depressive illness.

Sun’s magnetic field has flipped upside-down

The magnetic reversal is a regular occurrence. Image Credit: NASA/SDO NASA has announced that the long-awaited reversal of the sun’s magnetic poles has finally taken place. The reversal, which takes place all 11 years, is part of the sun’s natural cycle and is not believed to pose any risk to the Earth. The magnetic fields will now start their next cycle which will culminate in another reversal at the end of the 22 year long process.”A reversal of the sun’s magnetic field is, literally, a gigantic event,” said Dr. Tony Phillips. “The domain of the sun’s magnetic influence also known as the ‘heliosphere’ extends billions of kilometers beyond Pluto. Changes to the field’s polarity ripple all the way out to the Voyager probes, on the doorstep of interstellar space.”

Cydia Substrate (Formerly Mobile Substrate) For iOS 7 & 64-bit Devices Released In Cydia!

Jay Freeman, the creator and maintainer of the alternative App Store for jailbroken devices, has updated Cydia Substrate formerly Mobile Substrate to version 0.9.5000. The recently released Evasi0n7 jailbreak managed to take everyone by surprise, including Freeman himself, but todays news means that the final piece of the jailbreak puzzle is in place, leaving developers free to update their packages and extensions for Apples latest 64-bit devices such as the iPhone 5s and iPad Air. The Evasi0n7 jailbreak has been with us for a week or so now, and although it is capable of successfully liberating all devices capable of running iOS 7.x it has been rendered somewhat useless from an end-user perspective without a functioning version of Cydia Substrate. Freeman, probably better known by his online name of Saurik, has acted swiftly to make Cydia iOS 7 friendly as well as pushing out this version of Substrate that stitches extensions and the operating system together. The availability of Cydia Substrate version 0.9.5000 doesn’t immediately mean that every package on Cydia will function with newer devices. Apple’s iPhone 5s, iPad Air and new iPad mini with Retina are all powered by the company’s 64-bit A7 processor. Along with his announcement that Mobile Substrate has been released, Saurik has also made it known that extension and tweak developers will need to amend their own work and recompile the software with the ARM64 architecture in mind: Saurik: Substrate 0.9.5000 has been released, with preserve for iOS 7 and ARM64. For extensions to work on ARM64, they must be recompiled to ARM64. We may not be over the final hurdle in terms of achieving a fully functioning jailbreak experience for 64-bit devices, but we can now finally see the finishing line. The availability of an updated Cydia Substrate means that developers will no longer have to find inventive ways around the limitations of the jailbreak. Updating packages and recompiling for ARM64 shouldn’t actually take that long so we should begin to see a barrage of tweak updates landing on the default repositories fairly soon. For those that don’t know about Substrate or what all the fuss is about then it’s worth knowing that it’s one of the most integral parts of a consumer facing jailbreak. Cydia Substrate is the framework that allows developers to provide run-time patches to default system functions within Apple’s mobile operating system. It’s also the framework that provides protection against system failures by putting the device into safe Mode if anything goes wrong. If you followed our previous lead on: How To repair MobileSubstrate Tweaks on iOS 7 Without Any Side Effects and installed the Mobile Substrate repair package, it is important to uninstall it before installing the new Cydia Substrate update from Saurik. Mobile Substrate repair package can be uninstalled by navigating to Cydia > Manage > Packages. The new Cydia Substrate package can be installed by navigating to Cydia > Changes and then tap on Upgrade from the top right.
